Perhaps getting something more accurate would be the best solution. You
can get low cost GPS devices such as:
~US $60-100
http://www.satsignal.eu/ntp/FreeBSD-GPS-PPS.htm
~US $40
http://www.satsignal.eu/ntp/Sure-GPS.htm
and these are microsecond level accuracy.
