It would have except it's a terrible movie. Matt Damon is so visibly
uncomfortable with playing a gay man that once again we have a portrayal of
homosexuality as a pathology that can only lead to murder. Tired, tired,
tired. And boring, too.
And Minghella has once again assembled a picturesque movie which is devoid
of any interesting characters or dramatic tension. Sure Jude Law is hot,
but Gwenyth is wasted, so is Blanchett. And everything is subordinated to
the landscape, which is about the only thing it has going for it. Viva
Italia!
The same can be said for the English Patient. How he could manage to allow
two of moviedom's most attractive people (Scott-Thomas and Fiennes) to look
so bland and unappealing is beyond me. If the arid desert stands
metaphorically for their supposedly simmering sensuality, the strings in
all their viscous and damp syrupiness offer the only hint of moisture,
laughably smothering the whole picture. I laughed out loud.
