  This is verbatim the response I would have given if I'd had a chance to
write before now :) In fact I'm beginning to think Mr. Ripley's oscar
exclusion is a sort of punishment for The English Patient best picture win.
 There was an awful lot of backlash after that, i.e. Seinfeld.  Juliette
Binoche's scenes alone in The English Patient were better than most of the
movies I've seen this year.
  Concerning Talented Mr. Ripley and Cider House Rules, I think I
overstated the gap I see between them.  I liked Talented Mr. Ripley, and I
didn't dislike Cider House, I just thought that Ripley was a better movie.
A nomination I would have agreed with for The Cider House Rules is "Largest
assembly of incredibly cute kids in one movie".  If I visited that
orphanage to adopt a kid I probably would have walked out with all of them.
  In other media, I picked up "100% Chance of Rain" by Allen Clapp the
other day and I'm liking it more and more with each listen.  Does anyone
know what he's up to these days?
