And despite his sig.file (with which I agree) and his impressive
filmcriticness I feel obliged to dissent: PurpleNoon, an earlier French
adaptation of the same novel, _does_ portray homosexuality as a pathology
that etc. (and brings the bad gay man to justice at the end too). I
haven't read the novel, but I was impressed by the way the new Mr Ripley
film managed to avoid the homophobia of its precedent: in the last reel we
meet a charming, successful, completely non-murderous gay man, and his
death ends the movie BECAUSE it distinguishes the closeted sociopath, Matt
Damon (who, yes, looks uncomfortable in the role, but his character is
uncomfortable too) from the more-or-less out, well-adjusted gay man.
ObMusic: anyone heard the new Steinbecks? Love the first album, didn't
love the subsequent 10".... steve
