8.6 by itself does not have "issues" with QT, but with CPU upgrades: 
only with some 1400's, not all (mostly 166's), at least according to 
Sonnet, and if 9.x, then x>0. Problems with audio were only part of the 
nightmare. There were others on the list, however, who never had any 
trouble at all. Unfortunately, mine was one of the ones that couldn't 
tolerate 8.6. Thus the word "ideal". I finally gave up and bought an 
iBook.

Remember that 9 takes a proportion of your available RAM regardless. 
The only way you can trim it down is to make sure the faxware 
extensions are not installed. Otherwise, not installing other 
extensions doesn't really affect how much RAM 9 is going to use.
