I wouldn't even think of running OS 9 on your machine.

I have a Powerbook 500, upgraded with PPC processor, with full 40MB RAM, but with the original harddisk. I had OS 8 on it, but found it too slow, and went back to 7.6.
On another Powerbook, a 520 (non-upgraded) with not much RAM, I upgraded to OS 7.5.3 to make connecting to a network easier (OpenTransport 1.1.1) and now I'm browsing with that computer with iCab and emailing with Claris Emailer. Emailing is OK, but browsing is actually more like crawling, and iCab is not showing all pages properly.

I'd recommend to install a smaller system first. If you feel the speed is quite enough, upgrade to a newer/bigger/slower version. That way you'll also build up some experience, which you'll need for the very necessary tuning of a newer system to your 2300.

Greetings,

Ge'
BTW, Dan K: Did you know that "dank" is Dutch for "thanks" ? :-)
