I'm not sure if we are talking the same caliber of printers here. The higher end newer epson printers I know people swear to and probably are quality equipment. My printer did not have a chip in the cartridges. As for the quality of color I wouldn't even know how to measure that except with my own eye and if that is the case my HP beats my Epson hands down. Not to mention the epson always seemed a bit messy. The HP equipment requires a cartridge with a chip. If I remember right you can refill them once and fool the printer into thinking the cartridge is new then you have to replace with new cartridge. Also I think there might be a setting in one of the printer windows (HP) where you can tell the printer you are going to use an old cartridge and it will allow you to proceed. (May be just on the newer HP's)
