Have you looked at the menus? Under "Edit" there is a nice "Spelling"
item, with several options; I have "Check Spelling as I type" checked,
and if I need to know how to spell something I use the "Spelling..." item
via Cmd-: (ie, Command - colon) which offers suggestions and allows me to
add new words to the dictionary.

Cmd keys may be different outside US, but they would be listed in those
menu items.

There are not external applications; they are system utilities. Excalibur
would be an external application.

Hope that helps :)
