Except amongst hardcore games freaks, and a small minority of users with particular requirements e.g. processing digital images made by high-resolution scanning from medium-format film, which can easily be 100x the size of the images typically captured by consumer digicams. As well as Mersenne testers ;)
RAW format files off my $400 consumer point-n-shoot digicam (Canon S70, 7 MPix) are 10MB or so, and take around 45MB per layer in photoshop in 16 bit mode. thats not quite as bad as laser scanned 2-1/4 stuff, but still...
and you don't gotta be a 'hardcore game freak' any more to need a fast box, any middleschooler will tell you, the newer games need 2GHz MINIMUM to play reasonably well.
