That /could/ suggest a thermal problem with the CPU or PSU or motherboard components where something is slowly getting too hot under load... There is another possibility that's just hit discussion in various forums... As a test, can you disable Core #2 (the 3rd core as numbered 0 1 2 3) and try your tests again? Wait until what you find with the CPU tests. The idea with the IO is that you can get some very strange effects with IO or IO controller errors, even for very low IO applications. The best test to eliminate that is to run from a LiveCD whereby the only disk IO is reading the CD!
