Ecrix had just ejected a tape that become full from backing up. My screen
had gone to sleep, and was displaying the 'psychedelic screen saver'. I
tapped my wacom pen on my tablet, to wake up my screen so I could see the
Retrospect dialog box, and my computer froze, and the screen saver on my
screen stopped moving.

The only way I could restart my computer, was to press the power button, and
all I got on start up was the flashing question mark folder.

When pressing Command S on a restart, it would not boot into its code
display, I still got a flashing question mark icon. I couldn't get to a
display of code where I could run fsck -y.

I can boot from the CDs, but it won't let me do anything to my disk. It just
cannot see it. I.e. when I come to destination disk for choice of
installation there is nothing displayed.

No. I have just tried Disk Warrior, and that cannot see my hard disk either.
So, the next step I think is a recommendation for a good authorised Mac
repairer (vicinity of London). I have opened up my computer and I cannot see
what type of drive I have installed, there are no markings on it. I think I
remember reading some emails about 6 months ago, stating that some of the
drives installed in Apple computers are proving to be prone to failure. What
were they, and has Apple remedied this situation? I bought my G4 1Ghz Dual
in February 2002.

Thank you.
