Simon

I hope I'm not going to seed too much more confusion in your mind

I have printed your test on both my 1160 and 1290.

the 1290 produced completely stepless print. the 1160 has some just visible stepping in some areas of the grey wedge (darker grey part) and also the colour one (particularly in the red to blue area). Both printers are pixl profiled. the 1160 using Fotonic ink with a CIS and the 1290 with Epson inks. In this case both were printed onto Epson Matte Heavyweight although the profile for the 1290 is for Photo Gloss. The 1160 does however seem to give a more gradual progression through the tones - the 1290 result being a more sudden shift - though of course I wasn't printing to the profiled paper.

Interested to know if anyone else has both printers and has compared them.

BTW - the only reason I have one of each is that I bought the 1290 when there were no OSX drivers for the 1160, but switched back to the 1160 as my main printer when the driver became available.

On another note. Interesting article on inkjet papers in the BJP today - explaining how the different surfaces work. Have only skimmed it so far.
