I agree with Richard, throw it back at your supplier and demand a replacement, if that doesn't print properly get a full refund and don't take no for an answer, you're fully entitled to under EU consumer rights !
The supplier is in fact being very good to me. They have replaced the printer once already, plus sent me some inks and (Epson!!) paper as a goodwill gesture. This is Cancom.
The issue is really to get Canon to recognise the problem. There seems little point in endlessly swapping the printer out.
However, they'll only get one more chance. After that I will regretfully have to go for an Epson.
