Being a gluten for punishment I have been spending some time today in trying to sort our 9600....
With the machine stable I have cautiously been installing some limited software and have come to attempting to get it on the network. Everything is duplicated as on our G4 which is fine, however this box is not seen. What I feel is very significant is that the hub indicator light for the connection is not on. It's not the cable because I have already swapped the G4 box lead onto the 9600 .

Have you tried using alternative ports on the Hub?
Failing that, if you have a crossover cable, try connecting the two machines together without the Hub, thus eliminating at least one variable in the scenario.
Obviously if either of the above works then it is a problem with the Hub.
Otherwise it sounds like a problem with the Ethernet card in the Mac.
