Have you tried using alternative ports on the Hub?
Failing that, if you have a crossover cable, try connecting the two machines together without the Hub, thus eliminating at least one variable in the scenario.
Obviously if either of the above works then it is a problem with the Hub.
Otherwise it sounds like a problem with the Ethernet card in the Mac.

Many thanks. The hub is fine because the same cable when plugged into the G4 next to the 9600 lights up the hub and works fine so I think we can discount that as being the cause. I go with the faulty Ethernet card but it's on the MB so is it possible to poke in one in a spare PCI slot?
Yes you should be able to add an extra on to one of the PCI slots. Most computers will work running two networks.
