I would suggest a different problem... mainly as I have never seen a fault with an ethernet port on any Apple motherboard.
Dear Michael
Thanks for your posting.
A few things to check. I'm not sure how up to speed you are with networking but it would be good to check this list before assuming the hardware is at fault.
Enough to get by usually but always happy to learn more.
1. Connect ethernet cable - make sure it is not a cross over cable.
No its a normal Ethernet cable and proven as working fine because it is the usual one used to send info from the scanning room...actually there's a choice of three and they are all fine.
2. Goto: Applemenu >Control Panels > Appletalk > select ethernet NOT remote only.
Yes that setting is fine.
3. Check light on Hub
As stated in a previous posting it lights up with the G4 using this cable but nothing with the 9600 when the cable is used on this box.
The Apple 9600 series computers are notorious for problems with conflicts on the usage of the printer/modem port and for resetting the ethernet back to the printer/modem port.
No problem with this setting....remains as it should be. But the fact that the card does not show correctly in the Profiler seems to me to offer the clue
Once set the configs tend to be more reliable.
Check this list before assuming the hardware has failed. Networking these older machines is not always straight forward as auto network configuration is not available.
The settings match the setting of our G4 which has never given any networking problems.
Simon has sent off a card so I am hopeful that it will be good news when it arrives <BG>
Thanks all.
