I would suggest a different problem... mainly as I have never seen a fault
with an ethernet port on any Apple motherboard.

A few things to check. I'm not sure how up to speed you are with networking
but it would be good to check this list before assuming the hardware is at
fault.

1. Connect ethernet cable - make sure it is not a cross over cable.

2. Goto: Applemenu >Control Panels > Appletalk > select ethernet NOT remote
only.

3. Check light on Hub

The Apple 9600 series computers are notorious for problems with conflicts on
the usage of the printer/modem port and for resetting the ethernet back to
the printer/modem port.

Once set the configs tend to be more reliable.

Check this list before assuming the hardware has failed. Networking these
older machines is not always straight forward as auto network configuration
is not available.
