Dear Simon

Very many thanks indeed for coming to the rescue. Thanks Ed for your reassurance re: the PCI slots. Looks as if this long drawn out saga might be drawing to a conclusion.

One step forward thanks to the support of Simon Martin. The network card is now installed, the indicator lights at both ends of the connection are on, the software is installed (I think!) and certainly the driver is in the extensions folder and activated, but the computer is not seen on the network whereas the other Mac is.

In the system profiler against the Ethernet card it still shows Ethernet built in link n/a speed n/a Duplex n/a. The card however is identified in the devices tab. On the G4 when the network cable is removed this shows as link down or some such but on the 9600 link n/a and I think this hold the clue to the problem!

Has anyone got a suggestion as to where the problem lies.....

Thanks in eager anticipation <G>

Richard
