Hi David

Its primary source of power is the actual batteries in the reader itself
although it may draw nominal power from the iPod when transferring. The
built in battery on the newer series of iPods is only 630mAh so it makes
sense that for data intensive transfer, power is drawn from an
independent source otherwise it would be exhausted pretty quickly. By
the same principle, whenever data is transferred to the iPod from a
computer, its generally powered at the same time if you're using
firewire for example so you don't deplete the battery.

I'm running it with 4 700mAh Kodak triple A's with total output of
2800mAh, not 2200mAh as I said earlier - these are not what ships with
the unit although they are the same mAh rating, I need to confirm that
though as this is a pre-production review unit. I also don't have any
information on the rating of the batteries used to derive the 3gig
transfer they state in the manual.

I read your snip of my last post and realised that I'd posted AA not AAA
and the wrong mAh rating, I was just thinking of my Powerex 2200's which
I use in everything, I never use triple A's and these were borrowed for
review so sorry to cause any confusion. I'm still in dozy weekend mode!
<g> That said, the unit is still fairly weighty compared to the iPod.

Hope this helps
