Geoff,

I think that C1 will give you cleaner more accurate colours and a better
workflow that Capture 4. I have a wide range of software here to use (inc
CS), but the C1 workflow saves me hours a day when I am busy

You can trial a copy for 30 days (again!) to put off the buying decision. C1
can be quite hard to get into, but once you have used it once, it is very
straightforward. Mail me if you want a hand.

Download from www.c1dslr.com - you want 'Pro'

Forgive the plug, but I am currently able to sell C1 (all versions) at US
Prices. That means that if you are VAT registered, the cost is only US$499,
no VAT, a substantial saving ( about GBP 270)

>dipping toe into digital capture with Nikon D70, shooting RAW, and looking
for guidance from those on this list with more experience in using RAW
process software....

C1 Pro or Nikon Capture 4?

There is quite a price differential (400 vs 100).....
Best,

Nick.
