The company sent the
postcards today, and they vary in colour. Some are just right with a
neutral grey background as per the file, some have a distinct magenta cast
and some are neutral but darker. I have not used this company before and
the quality of the card itself is excellent, apart from this. I see this
as a major problem.

In my experience you need to develop a relationship with your printers. It's
the most valuable relationship you can have in this business. You need to
meet the people who are printing for you, get to know them personally and
nurture the relationship through dscussion and comparisons. Always send a
proof copy you have made so they know what you really want. Then they can
tweek the machines as necessary. When they know the standard you seek to
achieve, then thay have a chance to respond positively. Ask them for a proof
copy before the print run so you can compare. Takes the guesswork out of the
job, and minimises the risk of failure.

We recently go a book print back from the printers. They had not checked the
proof copy or given us any profiles for the paper. Consequently the cover
image was darker, more subtle than we had originally wanted, but the overall
effect was in a way very beautiful. We complained, got a 10% discount on the
print run, and the book was selected by their marketing department for
excellence and was shown in a number of International book fairs. Sometimes
a mistake can work to your benefit!

Best wishes,
Gary
