He will post a file on his website, and send a print to the client - like a profile. He suggests 'making a profile' using the print and the file, so that you can use it to soft-proof. I am totally lost as to what he might mean...

Just caught up on this interesting thread of yours and the excellent postings from Stephen Marsh....what a "trooper" he is.
If I am not very much mistaken your printer is embarking on the "you make your monitor match my print from this file", and we will both be colour managed! It would be interesting to know how he has PS set up and what he would recommend for profiling your monitor <BG> To be serious you should encourage him all you can, though I would not hold out too many hopes this will all end in roses...remember that roses have thorns!
