All Japanese corporations (and, of course, not only the Japanese) try to
play the proprietary game at first, and only give it up when either reverse
engineering or market forces in the form of quantifiable lost sales to
competitors make it obvious to them that remaining proprietary is no longer
in their interest.

Unfortunately, there is no real competition for the 1DS series at the
moment, so Canon probably feel justified by the demand and sales figures to
maintain their current attitude.

Believe me, demand and sales figures are the only things which register at
these corporations. I know. I did 9 years in R&D at Yamaha, developing
electronic musical instruments. Plenty of poorly-designed products were sold
by Yamaha, in the teeth of complaints by the likes of me. The reply from
middle management was *always* "it sells well, so no problem". Mostly, these
products' deficiencies were *not* fixed in the next year's model.

Best regards
