Thanks to Chris, Richard and Tony for their responses.

We had come to the conclusion that Canon were, once again, being pigheaded.
At first we had believed that the file format for the EOS 1Ds Mark II was
the same as that for the 20D - it looks as if we were wrong. All this
helps to illustrate the importance of DNG and has convinced us that that's
the way to go.

Canon make great professional cameras but to read the manuals or stumble
around trying to sort out the logic of the software suggest that they are
catering only for amateurs. There is something perverse about producing
such an advanced and capable piece of equipment and selling it with software
that can't manipulate the ultimate RAW file.

We don't usually rush in to buy the latest equipment, far from it. But this
time we imagined the pleasure of an overseas trip without film and it was
irresistible. As the camera arrived too late there isn't any rush anyway
but we'll try C1 and experiment with DNG.

Thanks for the advice.
