Yeah, that was major. My most recent TP (~100,000 frequent flyer
miles, eight months out of warranty, sheared hinge screws, dead
wireless card, dead USB ports, answers to "Lucky") did not get fixed,
so I've been reminded I need to have some alternative plans here. I
was pricing out a TP X60p at EmperorLinux (configured, installed and
ready to dual boot) and the price was pretty sobering. Ditto, nearly
to the penny for a MacBookPro. Will be interesting to see if Lenovo
pushes Emperor to compete harder, or to drop the product line...
"Sobering". :)
I looked at a variety of Emperer machines and felt they were nastily
overpriced. Even that didn't totally bother me; what I didn't like was
support. It felt like you were tied to them pretty tightly, and for some
crazy reason, I thought that's why we didn't like proprietary software...
They might have just been trying to reassure people that support was
available, but I couldn't figure out what would happen if I wanted to do
things my way.
The $4200 box with FC ended up being $2400 from PC Connection. And $200
is due my way in 6-8 weeks. :)
Although the CheapBytes CD DID set me back $5.
Now I'm off to pick up the SuSE 10.1 DVD for $40. I don't have a problem
paying for software. I just want a choice. You know, that American
thing, freedom to choose religion, freedom to choose who to vote for,
freedom to choose who to marry, freedom to choose which browser you want
to use...... :)
