Another great option, although it takes a bit of patience to snag the
right product, is
Woot.com
They buy overstocks, closeouts, discontinued merch and sell for pennies
on the dollar. New stuff is offered every day in a variety of
categories, and all shipping, no matter what it is or how many items, is
$5 per order. You have to check Woot.com every 24 hours as they change
the products offered at midnight.
The best part is that laptops seems to be falling out of favor with
consumers so manufacturers are cutting some inventory loose at deep
discounts. Woot.com has laptops on a regular basis, along with various
other hardware, like NAS and cable modems. I just checked and they have
a buttload of laptops offered today.
Oh, hey provide ZILCH tech support and while you can return product
(whatever reason) it's not automated. I've bought quite a few things on
Woot and never regretted it. Well, there was that three-piece suit...

Hey Ted - I totally agree - good Refurb better than New & Cheap. Check out the

Sign up for the NewEgg newsletter for a worthwhile discount and look for some
of their refurb stuff. You can find an older refurb machine
(3-4 years old) that might have been top-of-the line 4 years ago, for
$150 - $250. It's a lot more likely to last than a cheap new machine at that
price.

I will admit - had not checked out the Dell Outlet - even though I did hear
about it a little while ago. But, yes - for now - $500 is more than I wanted to
spend. Will try to keep it in mind for the future.
And - yes - MUST Be Windows - so Lenovo is out - if the Rootkit is really a
problem.

Have you tried looking at the Dell Outlet? i5 CPU machines are starting at
about $500 though.

I would say Lenovo outlet but since you're going to be running Windows, I
wouldn't recommend it with their rootkit problem.

I was just looking on Amazon - and I found this ASUS laptop:

Celeron CPU. Don't be expecting to do any serious number crunching.
