I still use Symantec AV Corporate. When configured correctly it can really
do a great job without adversely impacting performance as compared to its
default settings. Go to my ftp Server (ftp://gilhale.dnsalias.com,
anonymous user, non-passive mode) and navigate to the
"SymantecAntiVirusInstallationDocumentation" directory. There are a few
files in there documenting how I set up SAV (v-10.0.1, but it ought to work
well with v-11.x also as the concepts are the same). Once these setups are
put into place (go over the Screen Shots carefully, there are lots of little
details that make a huge difference in performance) you will see that SAV is
not the wicked monster it is made out to be. With its End User Norton AV
cousin the concepts are the same. Tuned correctly I find SAV, NAV and
Norton Internet Suite can really run well, and offer great protection. But,
anywhere I can use SAV I will, as it is easy to manage multiple machines
with their AV settings and reports from a central location. BTW, it is not
necessary to have a "real Server", or even a "pretend Server" to run SAV, as
it can run in an unmanaged mode for a handful of workstations.
