The problem is from _native_ Vista running and writing _directly_ to
the video card. Some of the problems (code-named "Aero") don't show up
if you're using an emulated video card under a VM.

Vista is not a good citizen, and it doesn't run the same way in a VM
as it does raw on the iron.

We snapshot the machine (using partimage under a Linux LiveCD) and can
rollback to the snapshot as needed.
