Hi Ed - I bought these discs off Amazon in the UK, they are BenQ 
cdr-80[52x], I've got 100 of the damn things! So, was your problem with 
Memorex the same then, in that the PTR1 just froze, and the battery had to 
be removed to get it to reboot?

Ok, Ed back here again.  What bran of cd's  are you using? If you are 
using  memorx disks, that might be the trouble.  I had the same problem, 
and it was also making some strange noises through the speaker.  I got a 
set of tdk's and some maxil disks,  and the problem went away.  Try 
keeping your discs clean as   possible,  and stick with the main brans.
