I can't remember if it was a public discussion, but I did at least discuss this with Alessandro somewhere :P The thoughts were: 1. If a minor fix is made (e.g. spelling or formatting correction), then we don't want to re-show that news item for any user who has already read and dismissed it. On the backend this means you just edit the existing item without publishing a new one. 2. if it's a big retraction (e.g. wrong date for a conference), then we should publish an explicit retraction/errata notice, so that users who have previously read the news item will be explicitly informed that they've been mis-informed!
