I just checked, I load 2 fonts explicitly (I had forgotten about that):
"Monospaced" and "courrier new" which I thought pretty universal.
These are both for the inbuilt monitor, so I'll take them out in a next
version.

A quick update: I verified that the same JRE installation does run another
java based GUI program out of a jar correctly so it seems that the JRE
environment itself is not corrupted.
