Hey Jason,
If you want WASAPI, i think you will have to go for reaper. I like the
reaper way of playing softsynths, actually. Notice the following though:
1. Midi Yoke is a 32-bit driver, you need the 32-bit version of Reaper
to access it, at least that's how far my experience goes.
2. Reaper 3 has major issues with receiving reset messages. When i hook
up QWS to Reaper 3 and send a gm reset, the vst process crashes rudely.
Reaper 4 fixes this, notice though that ReaAccess, the plugin used for
making Reaper accessible, has some bugs with this version and
development has ceased. I got softsynths working though.
3. If a soundcard supports Asio, i think i'd go the Asio way of working.
This means that you can also use vst host.
4. I think there's no major difference in latency time, it's all about
configuration.
Regards,
Leonard

I'm curious to know whether Reaper or VSTHost has a shorter latency time
in Windows 8 Home Premium X64 via an M-Audio KeyStudio 49.
Plan on using the core audio (WASAPI) method for best results.
Unless ASIO can deliver where core audio can't.
Small side note: I'd be interested in at least getting the Yamaha
SY-XG50 series going on this here lappy since that's what all of my
music's been recorded with as of late.
Preferably seeking out the 2-mb version of the soft synth.
The 4 MB is cool, but there's just something in the 2 mb version I can't
shake.
Is it safe to say I sometimes listen to music with my eyes?
That includes random teardrops on the M-Audio keyboard when a score
comes out near if not exactly perfect like I remember?
(For those wondering, "as of late" really refers to a Windows XP Service
Pack 3 desktop; It's still here, but I'm finding fairly quickly that
this is my go-to partner in crime, if you will)…
