Hi, You're right, a rest is the absence of notes - that's fine in the Note Editor and Realtime Recording.
But in Step Recording, my advice is to play another note that doesn't exist throughout the piece, e.g. the top C on your keyboard. |Then, after you finish the Step Record, use the Delete Notes tool to get rid of the "rests".
