I have made a modified sound effect. Using the on-board sound effect
‘bump.wav’ as a base, I made one lasting for about one second. Then,
while playing a 48,000 sample rate stream, I repeatedly press the back
key and generate lots of (longer) ‘bumps’. At the same time, looking at
the log with ‘tail -f /var/log/messages’.

>From time to time, various Alsa under-run messages appear. And, perhaps
about once in every ten or twenty messages, I am rewarded with ‘bass amp
drop out’. Patience is required. Sometimes you get lucky relatively
quickly.

After increasing the buffer size to 30,000 and the period count to 3
(from the default 20,000 and 2), I am unable, at least so far, to
provoke the Radio enough to drop out its bass. I think the additional
10ms headroom provided by the extra buffer is just enough to allow it to
ride through the storm.

If you can find a better method to provoke it, please let me know !

Basically, I think the Radio has enough umph to play out any 48k stream
that I have given it, keeping Alsa sufficiently supplied with frames.
But it seems to get close to the edge when dealing with a sound effect.
And, if it should fall behind and leave Alsa short of a frame or two,
then the crossover (for reasons unknown) may sometimes/occasionally lock
itself into ‘silent bass’. Note that the hardware bass channel is still
functioning (in my experience), which you can verify by turning the
crossover on and off.
