Hi there. I've been using Razor2 via SpamAssassin for a few months now, and I'm starting to question whether I have everything set up properly. I keep seeing mentions of detection rates on the order of 80% or better, but I'm not seeing anything nearly that good.
I'm running SpamAssassin + Razor via a sendmail milter, so spam detection is done at the earliest possible moment from the perspective of our network. A copy of anything scoring over 5.0 is saved on our mail server for later analysis, including the SA report, which makes after-the-fact analysis of rule efficacy fairly trivial. I also verify that all "trapped" messages are indeed spam before reporting them to Razor2. At initial reception time, I'm getting an average of 15% of my spam detected by Razor. Some days it's as low as 10%, some days it's as high as 20%, but if I take an average over an entire month, it's 15%. Often several days go by before I process my "caught spam" directory. Prior to reporting, I do a razor-check on the folder and then another after reporting for comparison. The difference is striking -- after I report my spam folder, roughly three times as many of the messages are categorized by Razor as spam! (Still no better than 60%,though). Could it be that my razor setup isn't optimal? Is there some explanation for what I'm seeing?
