Denis,
I just upgraded my laptop to a Toshiba 1905-S303. The specs. are Pentium 4
2.4 GHz, 512Mb memory and 40Mb hard disk, 15" TFT High Rez display.
Something interesting is the fact that most of the new laptops no longer
have a serial port or PS2 port, in fact, some have discontinued the parallel
port as well and they consider these ports to be legacy (i.e. obsolete) and
they support USB and Firewire only, even for the external keyboard and
mouse. The OS is Windows XP Home as the XP PRO version is a special order
item in most of the local stores, total cost was under $2,000. I have no
problems running R:Base for windows on it (other than the same type of
crashes that I get on Win 98SE). I run a local MS network at the office and
I login to a Novell network at my clients without any problems. Overall, I
am very pleased with this laptop, as the performance is great, but I plan to
upgrade to XP PRO as it has some features that I need.
I was told by one of the regional managers for Microsoft at a recent
seminar, that they will stop active support of WIN 2000 in the very near
future (???), after this it will have the same support that the older
Windows versions have. In the past, I have had problems getting drivers for
Win NT and with the new product being developed for the newer OS, I see this
problem only getting worse. So my recommendation would be to use XP PRO if
you are looking at the future or Win 2K if this is what your clients are
using and supporting...just my 2 cents on the subject.

Upgrading to a newer laptop from an old Win 98. Which windows would you
recommend? Seems to be a lot of bumps in the road in XP (pro and home
edition?).
Since most of my users are on a LAN, would it make sense to install NT on
the Laptop?

TIA,

Dennis
