In my case Steve's got it about right. I live ~50 miles from Walnut Creek. Contrary to the marketing slides, it does rain in California. Rain is a 'seasonal' occurrence in these parts. It is what passes for winter around here. The fenders will go back on my Romulus in six weeks or so and come off in the spring.
There's a picture here of an Atlantis (I believe Grant's) wearing fenders: http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/bicycle_models#product=50-038 Somewhere on the web is an inspiring essay from Douglas Brooks where he discusses 'resolved' versus 'resourceful' bikes. French constructeur bikes like Singer and Herse are examples of 'resolved' bikes, all details designed and constructed to support a specific purpose. Rivendell bikes are great examples of 'resourceful' bikes. Bikes that are designed with flexibility and mult-use in mind. This synopsis is a pale reflection of the fine expression that Douglas Brooks achieves in his writing. Consultation with the Google for the original essay is encouraged.
