"Unlike us, Man Utd have a lot of experience in this competition and a lot of
tradition. They are a very strong team, they have a young side that have
individual quality, a big team spirit and is one of the most complete teams in
the competition. But we have do what we did against Lyon, we have to be
convinced for our worth and be optimistic about our chances. After all, our
football is more technical and better tactically than English football. I have
confidence in my team, we have every intention of going all the way. It will
certainly be good practice for the game against Man Utd (to face AC Milan 3

'John Terry dropped a bombshell on Chelsea on Friday night by threatening to
quit the club at the end of the season after talks over a new contract broke
down.
The Chelsea and England skipper, who has been at Stamford Bridge since he was
14, is considering invoking Article 17 of a FIFA statute and moving to a club
in Europe this summer by buying out the remaining two years on his
£90,000-a-week contract.
It is a massive blow for Chelsea chief Jose Mourinho — who is hoping to recall
Terry for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham after his recovery
from a head injury — after they drew Valencia in Friday's Champions League draw.
Terry told Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon he wanted to "stay for life"
ahead of a final round of contract negotiations on Wednesday, but the club are
so far refusing to meet his demands.
Terry, who is a long-term target for Barcelona, could legitimately buy out the
remaining two years on his Chelsea deal this summer for £9m and has intimated
he will not be staying at Stamford Bridge.
The defender insists he is not motivated by money, but he still expected parity
with the club's top earners — Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko each earn
£130,000 a week — when he sat down with Kenyon last week.
Instead Terry, universally regarded as the most important player at the club,
was offered a token "take-it-or-leave"' increase on his present salary.
He was also furious because he believed the club had previously said they would
offer him a nine-year deal, but on Wednesday they insisted five was the maximum
to which they would agree.'

“The dual between Ronaldo and Mancini will be fascinating. They both have
speed, technique and invention. Ronaldo showed what he could do with that run
down the left to cross for Henrik Larsson’s goal against Lille. But Mancini
stole the show with the second goal against Lyon, so you’d say he’s ahead of
Ronaldo right now. Liverpool were the ones who did really well in the last
round. Manchester struggled a bit.”

ahead but when you look at the way we are playing for each other and getting
results it helps. Obviously you set out to win every match you can and,
hopefully, that means winning something at the end of the season. As a team we
believe in our ability and we have great confidence. Everyone’s fit this year,
which obviously helps. But there is generally more confidence among everyone
and I know I have a lot more belief. The whole team has been playing
brilliantly and that means opponents have a tougher job stopping us. They see
Ronaldo running down the wing, or Scholesy and Giggsy coming through the middle
and don’t know who to pick up. Goals are coming from everywhere and teams know
they can’t just concentrate on one or two players.”

Posted Saturday, March 10, 2007 by ed:
'The English have partied in Athens since the days of Lord Byron but even that
hedonist could never have envisaged a knees-up on the scale threatened by
yesterday's Champions League draw. The prospect of the Greek capital staging an
all-English European Cup final remained a live one after the quarter-final draw
kept the Premiership trio apart.

Chelsea go to Spain to play Valencia, Manchester United face Roma in Italy, and
Liverpool travel to the Netherlands to counter Arsenal's conquerors, PSV
Eindhoven.

The draw is a teasing one, offering the possibility of a pair of mouth-watering
semi-finals as well as an anglicised final. In the last four Chelsea and
Liverpool might reprise the 2005 semi-final. Alternatively that pairing could
pit Chelsea against PSV's Alex, who may, or may not, be their player depending
who you believe; or Liverpool against Valencia, Rafael Benitez's former club.
In the other half of the draw, Manchester United could meet Bayern Munich, the
team whose hearts United broke in 1999, or Milan, who knocked them out in 2005.
In the former case it could mean a first club appearance at Old Trafford for
Owen Hargreaves, the England midfielder so keenly courted by United.

First the quarter-finals have to be negotiated and, as intriguing as the
English challenges are, the clash between Bayern and Milan is the heavyweight.
Between them they have won 10 European Cups with both coaches, Ottmar Hitzfeld
and Carlo Ancelotti, leading their clubs to the title.

Each of the three English clubs is also coached by a man who knows what it is
like to win the competition; none of their opponents is. Will this make a
difference? Not to judge from the tactical acumen shown by Ronald Koeman (PSV),
Luciano Spalletti (Roma) and Quique Sanchez Flores (Valencia) in the last
round: each of their teams beat more favoured opponents.

David Gill, Manchester United's chief executive, said: "It's a fantastic draw.
For me, playing in Europe is about playing other European teams." His
counterpart at Chelsea, Peter Kenyon, concurred before noting: "We would rather
be at home in the second leg." Jose Mourinho was unperturbed. "It makes no
difference if you play away first or not," he said. The Chelsea manager added:
"When you progress into the last eight only good teams are there. It's a case
of the style and culture of the team you draw. We got a very good Spanish team."

That team will include Asier del Horno, who Mourinho signed, and swiftly sold,
at Stamford Bridge. The left-back has been so troubled by an Achilles tendon
problem that he made his debut only last weekend but expects to play. He said:
"It will be great to return and see the people there, but I have to put that to
one side and make the most of what I know about Chelsea. They will be
favourites but if we remain humble we have a chance to spring a surprise."

Valencia are likely to be without at least two players, David Navarro and
Carlos Marchena. The pair are expected to be suspended by Uefa in the wake of
the brawl which tarnished their victory over Internazionale.

Chelsea are the only team in the last eight not to have played in a European
Cup final, but even some of those who have are unhappy with their record. Gill
said that he felt United had under-performed in Europe in recent years. Sir
Alex Ferguson has said the same and, yesterday, another Old Trafford knight
agreed. "The club should have won it more often," said Sir Bobby Charlton. "A
lot of people have said that Alex has not won as many European Cups as he
should have considering the times he has won the title, so it would be
marvellous for him."

The manager himself was focusing only on Roma. "They have some great players
and are very experienced." Ferguson added: "I don't think there has been a big
heavyweight in the Champions League this season. Last season everyone was
trying to avoid Barcelona, but not this season." Not everyone agreed. Ancelotti
was pleased to avoid United. "They play the best football in Europe right now,"
he said.

Much of United's hopes will rest on Cristiano Ronaldo, who Charlton showered
with praise. "Ronaldo has been fantastic. It takes a great player to take the
bull by the horns and lift people and he's been doing that recently. He does
things that I've never seen anybody else do, and he is as tough as hell. He's
been a better player than even people here thought he could be."

He is not, though, as good as Francesco Totti, according to Rosella Sensi, the
daughter of the Roma owner Franco Sensi and the club's acting president.
Spalletti was just as confident. "Our football is more technical and better
tactically than English football," the Roma coach said. Totti himself picked
Wayne Rooney as United's key player.

While a match involving the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney and Totti whets the
appetite, Liverpool's tie with PSV may be one for the tacticians. The pair met
in two dour group stage matches, Liverpool following the goalless draw in
Eindhoven with a 2-0 home win. Liverpool looked the better side but Koeman put
out Liverpool last season when managing Benfica and Benitez insisted yesterday
that he would be taking nothing for granted. At this stage, no one will.'

Collection for John Wroe's funeral

This is an extraordinary request. Some of you may have heard about the sad
death of 'Big John' Wroe. John was a very well known and well liked matchgoing
Red and a longstanding member and supporter of both IMUSA and MUST (SU) and
worked hard for both organisations.

When John's mum (another major MUST & IMUSA supporter) died 18 months ago a
number of United supporters went to her funeral simply because with no other
family on the scene John only had two things in his life - his Mum and
Manchester United so friends wanted to be there as his family.

Sadly John died last Friday at a shockingly young age and with no other family
and no money in his estate his good friend Dave has taken on the role of
organising the funeral which will cost £2785.00

So far donations of £686.38p have been received so it would be great to think
that other members would find it in their hearts to make a small contribution
towards sending off one of our brothers in the Manchester United family.

MUST and IMUSA are having a joint collection and any MUST members who wish to
do so are encouraged to send donations via IMUSA (PayPal or postal as soon as
possible) following the instructions here:
 http://www.imusa.org/newsarticle.php?id=45
http://www.imusa.org/newsarticle.php?id=45

For anyone who'd like to attend his funeral this is from Dave:

"John will be cremated on Thursday 15th March at 1.20pm at Southern Cemetary
Crematorium.

Please be there for around 1pm - ish with your UNITED tops on. And send our
John off to where all the good people go.

Those of you who can't make the crematorium, the wake will be held at The
Bricklayers Arms on Ordsall Lane, Salford. Just by McDonalds on Regent Road
from 2.30pm onwards."

"Of course we can win the game. It is massive for us. We are going to try to
win this competition. Obviously, we have got to do it the hard way by playing
Manchester United and that is never easy, but we have a decent record against
them. On our day, we can beat anyone and the results have shown that this
season. It will be difficult because United are a special side. They will
probably win the Premier League - and I hope they do because they are a good
team and play attractive football. But they are not unbeatable Some people are
saying they will put out a weakened side because of their Champions League
commitments, but will they? Any United side is not exactly weak, is it?"

for as long as we need to. It was disappointing not to get a result at home
against Blackburn to put us further ahead of Everton and Reading - and creating
that little bit of a gap going into the game against United. We can't win every
game at home, but we ought to make sure we don't lose them. That we didn't
against Blackburn was down to our own deficiencies."

United have drawn AS Roma in the Champions League quarter finals.

The Reds will travel to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday 4 April, with the
return leg against the Giallorossi at Old Trafford just six days later on
Tuesday 10 April, which means United's Premiership clash with Sheffield United
will be rearranged.

United cannot face English opposition until the final, and if the Reds do reach
the last four they will play the winner of AC Milan and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea and Liverpool could meet in the semi finals if Jose Mourinho's side
overcome the challenge of Valencia and Liverpool get past Dutch side PS
Eindhoven.

Roma, currently second in Serie A behind runaway leaders Inter Milan, are no
pushovers, having already knocked out Lyon, the team Sir Alex had tipped to go
all the way this season.

Club captain and team talisman Francesco Totti and Alessandro Mancini both
scored to earn a 2-0 aggregate win over the French champions.

Champions League quarter final draw in full:
AC Milan v Bayern Munich
PSV Eindhoven v Liverpool
AS Roma v Manchester United
Chelsea v Valencia

Semi final ties:
Roma/United v Milan/Bayern Munich - Tues 24 April
Milan/Bayern Munich v Roma/United - Wed 2 May

"Yes, I'm relieved. I think playing in Europe is about playing other European
teams. I haven’t discussed it with Alex (Ferguson) but I think that’s right.
Chelsea and Liverpool could meet in the semi and it could be an all English
final. Who knows? If we’re honest with ourselves we’ve underachieved in the
past few seasons in Europe, so quite rightly, a club of our stature and with
what we’ve achieved, should be right in there in the latter stages. We’re
delighted to be there, Sir Alex, the players and the fans and it should be a
great occasion."

[75] Fergie on Roma draw
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, March 9, 2007 by ed:
"We've never played Roma before so it'll be a new and exciting experience.
That's the great thing about Europe, you play teams you've never played before.
We respect their last result [beating Lyon]. They have some great players like
De Rossi and Mancini. Obviously it's pointless looking beyond this game. We
must concentrate on this game only. We're really looking forward to it."

[74] Fergie on tomorrow
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, March 9, 2007 by ed:
"It should be a fantastic Cup tie and we'll be taking a very strong squad. Away
games are never easy in the Cup and I don't expect it to be any different on
Saturday. They'll be positive because they've got a home draw and will think
they can win. However, there is a great resolve amongst our players, you saw
that at Liverpool and at Fulham. There's no doubt that as the season goes on
the team spirit is growing. We'll have a strong support behind us which we're
very pleased about. The council have restricted our support in the past because
the fans stand, but I watch games every week and everyone is standing.
Middlesbrough have fought hard to get our support increased and credit to them
for that. But we ask our fans to respect the stewards at the ground and allow
them to go about their job in an easy manner."

[73] Reaction to draw
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, March 9, 2007 by ed:
AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti

"Bayern Munich have a great tradition and a lot of value. We know them well,
having faced them in the past.I would have been more disappointed to have met
Roma or Manchester United at this point of the tournament. Man United is the
team that plays the best football in Europe right now.' It is going to be a
very even game. Bayern have great tradition
and great strength. They are a very phsysical side and they eliminated Real
Madrid. The team hasn't changed that much with respect to last season but the
arrival of coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has revived Bayern. They had struggled before
the arrival of Hitzfeld and now they are back on track. Hitzfeld has great
experience, he has won the Champions League too and I think he is our main
threat. He already showed against Real Madrid in both legs his tactical
experience and I'm sure he will make life difficult for us.''

[72] Fergie press conference
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, March 9, 2007 by ed:
highlights from RN contributor Martin - Fergie had it early this morning
because he was attending the funeral of an OT worker in the afternoon

"The loss of Henrik after tomorrow is a big loss but we didn't have him at the
start of the season and he did very well. And we respect his decision. We're
absolutely delighted with the work out Alan Smith got and he'll figure
tomorrow."

"With paul Scholes it's a little break and he can come break fresh. It's a bit
perverse thinking but there could be some joy there - it could be a good break
for the lad."

"Tommorow we're taking a very strong squad and it should be a fantastic cup
tie. There is a great resolve amongst the players. Fantastic team spirit which
is encouraging for me."

"Smith's training performances have been very good. The form of the team has
prevented me giving him games. I've been trying since Boxing Day to give all my
squad minutes on the clock. I've been able to use my squad very well and that's
going to work for me as they will not come in cold and that's a blessing for us"

"There's no regret over Larsson. I respect him and he's kept his promise and
quite rightly he should stick by that. We're lucky to have had him the short
spell we did."

"Scholes had this knock and we said at half-time why don't you come off. He's
got fantastic application. Sometimes you have to risk by picking a team, and we
wanted to get through with minimum amount of fuss and we got that. Lille had a
soft header at the post, other than that we never had problem with lille: an
economic performance. If we didn't reach our usual attacking heights I've no
apologies to make for it"

"all games are important now, doesn't matter who you play."

"Dong has needed some real hard work. He will come into the squad because he
has some terrific attributes, very athletic"

"Lyon's form had dropped off so that maybe wasn't a surprise. Them not scoring
in Roma, sorted Roma - who are a very experienced team with a very experienced
midfield. I thought Lyon would be one of the dark horses, but their form hasn't
been great and they had some injuries"

"There was talk about being lucky against Fulham and Liverpool, but if you play
4 away games in that amount of time I think it's a fantastic achievement, I
really do."

"defending is part of the game too as we showed at Liverpool. I watched the
game again and I thought we played better - defensively - than I had. Our
fourth away game in a row it was a great achievement."

"United are always going to get a chance in the game - always on one occasion.
This season we've missed a lot of chances in games we've won quite well. In the
last few weeks we've only had three or four chances per game. O'Shea comes on
and gets the one real chance and scores."

"I think Larsson would be fit enough to play at this level. Not every week, but
30 games in English football at 36. His technique is fantastic and he looks
after himself. A credit like Teddy Sheringham"

"Lille are a stubborn, organised team to play against us but the tests are all
in front of us"

"I always say all you can ask for is a home Cup tie and Boro have that so they
will make a game of it. But we've got a good support behind us. The council
didn't want that but Boro fought. And the FA is about big away support. I look
at every game but everyone is standing. Somewhere they are going to have to
realise that some people prefer to stand. At Liverpool people are standing
against Barcelona. I think it was a concern for Boro and they fought hard to
get our support up and credit to them but all I ask is our supporters to
respect their stewards"

"I thought it was a penalty on Wednesday with Ronaldo. He was a good ref, he
was everywehere, strong fitness levels. Ronaldo is going to be robbed of
justified moments (because of his reputation). Ronaldo's feet are so quick I
don't think they see him"

"Ronaldo is at the right club - no question about that. He shouldn't want to go
anywhere else - he is at the right club"

"It's a fantastic draw. Any team we play is going to be a tough draw but after
a couple of years out of the Qtr Finals it's great to be here. Personally I'm
glad to avoid the English teams. Getting the away goal is very important, it's
the luck of the draw at this stage but we're looking forward to it>
