The simple fact of the matter is that though this is a free United news service, we CAN'T SURVIVE without covering costs, let alone hoping to develop, grow and update the site one day with your support and backing! We hope you like what we pride ourselves on being one of the best - continually updated by a team of volunteers and contributors - news sites for United news on the net. As well of course as the longest serving Utd fanzine (now 20 years old! scary!). But unless YOU support US, Red News will not survive. RN wishes everything ran on free air, trust us we do. But it doesn't. And we can't. We NEED YOUR HELP to survive. To keep providing this news day in, day out and producing our main focus - the fanzine. We're not after a major amount, not a pint of your blood, less in fact than a pint of beer costs a month. Ideally we'd like you to take out a subscription if you can't buy the mag at OT. £25 for a years mag AND free web news to boot as well as entry to our VIP Forum. That is very cheap. But buying a mag, or using our sponsors (at the bottom of the page) helps. Our very survival always depends on you. We had online hits from over 60 countries recently. But subscribers in less than 10 of those. And that just a handful of people. That's not a moan at our foreign readership, we realise there are difficulties, we realise too that home or abroad people will just look away now. But please take these appeals seriously. People using us with hits on this site (where we don't get a penny for and can cost us if we go over our quota for the month) far, far outweigh fanzine readers who help us out. One simple question - if we weren't around, of course you'll get United news, but do you think it would be as substantial as RN provides - EVERY DAY?... We love the way some of you interact with the fanzine, and site, sending e.mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED], contributing, sending gossip, stories, info and helping with appeals. Thanks to all our loyal supporters. Who continue to stand by us. And it's never too join in or too late to help us! Every little helps, nothing is too small an effort, and please understand why we have to continually ask as we run a growing 365 a day news website news and forum service, and fanzine, especially as more and more people use this site. Now in their tens of thousands of online users. We are a very - and we mean very - small operation (with hopefully a loud voice!), not run from any headquarters, but just a bunch of United supporters providing news and comment and giving our readers a voice. 100% Independent. 100% Unofficial. The first leg will be in the Italian capital on April 4 and in less than one day all 50,000 tickets have been snapped up. Another 22,000 went to season ticket holders who had an option to get their hands on the seats first, but other supporters queued around the city at the various sales points. There was controversy, as some of the booths opened their doors as early as 8.30am to prevent public order problems, while others waited until the official 10am start. We are very sorry if some people felt they were treated differently to others, but we can assure we did everything we could to ensure the fans received their tickets, said Roma de facto President Rosella Sensi. Meanwhile, there is more fan trouble on the horizon as new anti-violence laws demand strict controls over banners. As of today, supporters must lodge a written request to the clubs at least seven days before a game if they are to bring in a banner. This will include details of the size, material used, content and photographic evidence. The Curva Sud will go to Rome with its banners, then we will decide what is the best course of action, explained Milan Ultras leader Giancarlo Capelli ahead of this weekends Olimpico match. It is true the deadline has passed, but up until today we did not know who was meant to receive the request. We will not give in. There are other problems linked to the new guidelines, as it could see the end of Italian footballs legendary choreographed symbols covering an entire end of the stadium. With these rules, each individual fan group is forced to present a written request, so there is the risk we wont be able to get together and organise the choreography we planned for Tuesday against Bayern Munich, added the Rossoneri supporter. Inter fans are taking the news even worse, as their Ultras groups warn it is possible the Scudetto party choreography will have to be binned. Juventus and Torino supporters have taken a different approach. They are preparing a photographic book showing the banners and where they will be positioned in the stadium.' --------------------------------- [18] Official site on Paddy Kennedy --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: 'Were saddened to report former United defender Paddy Kennedy passed away, aged 72, at the Trafford General Hospital on Sunday 18 March following heart and respiratory problems. The Dublin-born Urmston resident arrived in Manchester as a 15-year-old and played alongside the likes of Duncan Edwards, Eddie Colman, David Pegg and Liam Whelan in Uniteds FA Youth Cup winning side of 1953. He made one appearance for the first team in a 4-2 defeat at Wolverhampton in October 1954 before joining Blackburn Rovers in August 1956. He later went on to play for Southampton and Oldham Athletic. Kennedy, a passionate supporter of amateur football in Urmston, is survived by his wife Bridget, four children, 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.' --------------------------------- [17] Mirror on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: 'SIR ALEX FERGUSON may rest Wayne Rooney for Manchester United's home game with Blackburn on Saturday to save his star striker from burn-out. Rooney's punishing schedule has seen him play seven games in 25 days. Now Fergie wants to have the 21-year-old in peak condition for next week's Champions League away tie against Roma. But Paul Scholes is ready to return after suspension. And he said: "The Premiership has become much harder to win. Arsenal and Chelsea in the last three seasons have performed so well that you have to be more consistent." --------------------------------- [16] Henry Winter in Telegraph on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: 'Of all the sparkling talents on Planet Football, from Kaka to Ronaldinho, David Villa to Cristiano Ronaldo, there is no one that Steven Gerrard would like to see joining him at Liverpool more than Wayne Rooney, soul-mates becoming club-mates. Gerrard dreams of the pair causing havoc in tandem, inter-passing around the box, embarrassing opposing goalkeepers and lifting trophies. Sadly for Gerrard, Rooney remains committed to Manchester United, so Liverpool's captain must seize the opportunity presented by England to sate his craving for dovetailing with Rooney. With Gerrard expected to play a more central role against Andorra tonight, he can work closely with Rooney, England's deep-lying striker. Raised on similar Merseyside estates, and sharing a footballing philosophy of hard work spiced with the spectacular, the two are good friends. It was little surprise yesterday to hear Gerrard passionately supporting Rooney, who has been criticised for failing to score a competitive goal at international level since Euro 2004 in Portugal. "For England there have been problems, but if you look at him with Manchester United he's on fire, which I don't like to see,'' remarked Gerrard, who will provide England's midfield drive at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic. "He's playing some of the best football of his career for United. He's just a goal away from turning it around at international level. A goal would do Wayne the world of good and then he'll go on and score a load more. I don't have to tell anybody what a wonderful talent Wayne Rooney is. Everybody knows.'' Rooney remains upbeat, Gerrard insisted. "He's all right at the moment, he's the same as usual. He's working really hard in training. He knows himself that he needs a goal at international level. It's my responsibility and other players' that we create the chances for Wayne so he can get on the end of one.'' Rooney's listlessness in front of goal embodies a general malaise infecting the entire England team. For all Steve McClaren's spinning of statistics, his players have recorded only one goal in 494 minutes. "When you're not getting the results, when the chance comes you tend to snatch at it, try too hard maybe to score,'' Gerrard continued. "You need to relax. "You say we weren't right, but if we'd scored a couple of those half-chances then we're sitting here boasting about a 2-0 away win in Israel. So it's small details. We need to make sure we convert these chances. It's that fine line between drawing and winning. "If you're on a run of results where you've only scored one goal in five, or only one win in five, confidence is going to be affected. But we do believe in each other. When you look around the dressing room - not just at the 11 but the whole squad - and look at the ability we've got, we just have to start getting the results.'' Starting tonight, against the team ranked 163rd in the world. "Performances have to come second,'' England's vice-captain added. "I know the fans want 4-0 or 5-0, but the most important thing is to get the win. We're obviously going to try and play as well as we can, but the result is what we're focusing on at the moment. "We're not enjoying the situation we're in. We know results have to improve drastically if we're to start enjoying playing for England again. Come the end of your career you want to look back on your international career with pride and feel that you achieved something at this level. We're not going to do that playing the way we're at the moment.'' McClaren claimed that players like Gerrard and Rooney find it "10 times harder'' to perform for England than for their clubs, citing the intense expectations and opponents' tendency to sit deep and defend in numbers. Such a contention raised eyebrows as many observers feel that more technically and tactically demanding obstacles lurk in the latter stages of the Champions League. Being 3-0 down in the European Cup final in Istanbul was a fairly hard situation to overcome, but Liverpool's captain half-understood McClaren's argument. "What he means is that there's a lot more pressure and considerably more coverage of England games, and if you don't get the right results a lot more people are going to cover it,'' Gerrard said. "I don't think it's harder because, at the end of the day, you're going out to play a game of football. But we're coming up against tricky opposition in difficult conditions. But we're big players. We're at big clubs. We play in big matches, so we must handle the pressure that comes with that.'' The scrutiny should ease temporarily this evening with victory over Andorra, but Gerrard and company still have work to do to rescue their position in Group E. Asked by a Russian reporter whether the fight for second place behind Croatia was between England and Guus Hiddink's Russia, Gerrard replied: "We want to finish as high up as possible and you better tell everyone back in Russia that they'll be in for two hard games.'' A streak of defiance courses through Gerrard. England will need that spirit, along with a revitalised Rooney, to rediscover the path to Austria and Switzerland.' --------------------------------- [15] MEN on Reserves --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: 'UNITED moved to the top of the Premier Reserve League Table after a 2-1 victory over Everton at Widnes' Halton Stadium last night. The Toffees took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Kieran Agard headed past United keeper Tom Heaton. But United were level within a minute of the restart thanks to Craig Cathcart's header. The goal transformed the young Reds side and it was no surprise when Sam Hewson blasted in the 73rd-minute winner, meaning that the reserves join the full senior side at the summit of their league.' RN man on the spot there writes: "Hewson continues to impress and have to say he's taken to every challenge thrown his way so far this season. He keeps improving and hopefully he and Cathcart will shine at OT next week for the Semi 2nd leg of the Youth Cup. Get yourself down and support the kids!" United have been allocated only 17,600 tickets for the April 14 clash at Villa Park with the FA revealing their supporters have been punished for breaching rules on standing up. Watford fans will get 17,800, which is actually more than their average home attendance of 17,200 this season. That brought a flood of criticism from United fans, whose own allocation is less than a quarter of the average crowd at Old Trafford this season. Some have suggested that the game should have been switched to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium or the Millennium Stadium, both further to travel for Manchester-based fans, but with much bigger capacities than the 42,500 seats at Villa Park One angry United fan contacted M.E.N. Sport and said: "I thought one of the lessons learned from the Hillsborough disaster was to not give a smaller club more tickets than the other team, because at that semi-final in 1989 Liverpool got 23,000, and Nottingham Forest 29,000." And the decision was roundly condemned by the Independent Manchester United Supporters Association (IMUSA), which claims that the FA has repeatedly failed to consult supporters. IMUSA chair Mark Longden said: Its ridiculous. Watford have an allocation which virtually reflects their average home gate, while ours is a fraction of our attendance. I think the real issue here is why the supporters were not consulted. If Chelsea fans can go up to Old Trafford for their semi-final, there is no reason why United fans could not have gone down to Ashburton Grove, with a 60,000 capacity. It seems that every year we have these issues over venue and allocation, but no-one ever asks the supporters what they think. The FA has responded by saying that part of the problem is a history of United fans standing up in seated areas at Villa Park, with Aston Villas safety? officer advising that their allocation should be cut as a result. An FA spokesman said: The difference between the allocations is a total of 200 tickets, and we have to divide the stadium somehow. If you incorporate the hospitality areas, there will actually be more Manchester United fans inside the ground. The United allocation was also reduced on the basis of advice from Aston Villas safety officer, due to the fact that they persistently stand when they go to Villa Park. --------------------------------- [13] Guardian on Giggs --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: 'The career of Ryan Giggs has been blessed with almost perpetual success, yet the disappointments remain his driving force. One of the biggest has been a failure to appear in a major international tournament and, with Wales unlikely to figure in Euro 2008, he hopes to be available for the World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign. Giggs, who leads Wales against San Marino at the Millennium Stadium tonight, will be 36 by the time of the finals in South Africa. "I still enjoy the challenge of going out and producing - so long as the fitness is good and I'm injury free then I do [see myself playing a part in the World Cup qualifiers]," he said. "I am doing everything that I can possibly do . I have got slower, that is a fact. I probably don't run around as much as when I was younger. You try to save energy and be a lot more eff ective." Giggs's longevity is such that, now past 700, he is closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton's Manchester United record of 759 appearances and a record ninth league championship-winning medal. "It does not matter to me - when I finish I might look at the medals," said Giggs. 'Every medal I have won, I have not looked at. They are in the museum and they can stay there as they don't mean anything to me. What means something is the next medal. When I finish, I will perhaps look back and be proud. It is not the games or trophies that I have won that stick out, it's the disappointments." Giggs yesterday responded to remarks by the former Republic of Ireland international Eamon Dunphy about saving himself in Saturday's defeat at Croke Park. "I have been criticised throughout my career. To rise to it would be wrong. I would not have got where I've got without wanting to do my best in every game." --------------------------------- [12] Giggs on Wales --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: "John has always maintained it's a long-term plan. Obviously we need to win games and get the right results right from the off to breed that confidence. We've not done that really so far in this campaign. Hopefully we can get back on track on Wednesday, then we've got the Czech Republic, so hopefully we can end the season with nine points and still in the mix. We're under no illusions, it's going to be very hard now. We've got San Marino home and away, we've got Ireland at home, we've got the Czech Republic at home. We've got games that we can win and, if we get that momentum and get that winning mentality, then anything can happen." --------------------------------- [11] Rossi --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: "My contract with United does not expire until June 2010 and I expect to complete it. It is important for young players to get their chance and I am getting my chance at Parma where I am turning out regularly and playing well. Going to Newcastle was also a good experience, though I didn't play as much, but the important thing was that I learned a lot while there. Of course it was special to be there at Wembley last Saturday. Just by saying the name Wembley makes you have goose bumps. It was a great occasion and I think we put on a good show." --------------------------------- [10] Lurch - we mean Crouch - on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: "Wayne Rooney is a fantastic talent and you don't want to curb that, you want to let him play his natural game. Although at times he can still get carried away, I think if you take that [aggressive streak] away, he wouldn't be half the player he is. He is maturing and he's a big asset to the England side. He's still a very young player and has been through so much in his career already. Everyone can see he's blossoming at Manchester United, playing with probably the best team in the country at the moment, and he's someone we shouldn't be abusing. We should enjoy his talents - encourage him - and hopefully they'll come to the fore and help England through." http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2051413-5042808 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.jdoqocy.com/click-2051413-10387791 Hotels in Manchester Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news highly recommended, Andy Mitten interviews 11 famous United players for their story Pre-order the Harry Potter book out on July 21st, delivered directly to your door on the day of release in the UK for £8.99 Borat with Amazon out in March --------------------------------- [9] Fergie on PL --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: "I think the competition in the Premier Division has got harder in the last few years, there is no question about that. I think he is just a goal away from turning it around for England. He is working really hard in training. I dont have to tell anybody what a wonderful talent Wayne is. --------------------------------- [3] Spanking brand new Polo shirts --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news NEW! For me, there is absolutely no problem any more. Such things happen in football - I make no drama out of it. Much more important is that we have won this game." --------------------------------- [1] Madrid up their Ronaldo games --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed: Real Madrid club president Ramon Calderon "We really like him (Cristiano Ronaldo) but he belongs to Manchester United and they have to decide to sell him first. If that is the case then we'll be first in the queue, although we won't be paying 80 million euros ($106.2 million) for him. I don't think any player, even someone with Cristiano Ronaldo's quality, is worth that money, but we are definitely interested if Manchester United want to sell him. Kaka belongs to AC Milan and I spoke so much about signing him in the election campaign that I'd better keep quiet until we actually see him here signed up for the club. I would love to see both Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo play for Real Madrid next season, but it won't be easy. Any big club would have this sort of objective and Real Madrid is a big club." "I'm not aware that any deal has been done yet, but the club's technical staff like Christoph Metzelder and he will be out of contract at the end of the season. If he does decide to come he will sign a three-year deal. Fabio Capello is the Real Madrid coach and he has a contract and we will make an evaluation of what has been achieved at the end of the season. It may happen that he might not want to continue, but you'll have to ask him about that. We'll see what happens at the end of the season. We haven't talked nor will we talk to anyone until the situation changes. Of course I like Bernd Schuster, Rafa Benitez and (Jose) Mourinho. I like all the great coaches." --------------------------------- [25] Reuters on Ronaldo injury --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: Cristiano Ronaldo is doubtful for Portugal's Euro 2008 Group A qualifier in Serbia on Wednesday after injuring his left heel in training. 'At this time we don't know if he (Ronaldo) will play,' team doctor Onofre Costa told reporters on Tuesday. 'He sprained his heel. 'It doesn't look very serious but we are not sure if he will be fit.' The Manchester United winger had ice strapped round his ankle and heel after twisting his foot and limping off the pitch. Portugal are third in the eight-team group, level on 10 points from five matches with fourth-placed Serbia. Poland are top with 13 points from six matches followed by Finland with 11 from five.' http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2051413-10351781 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2051413-10295995 Have a Free £25 bet on totesport Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [24] FA CUp Final will be at Wembley --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: from BBC 'The Football Association has confirmed the new £800m Wembley Stadium will host this year's FA Cup final on 19 May. Brent Council has given the stadium a general safety certificate after two successful "ramp up" events. A community day was staged for 34,000 people and England under-21s faced Italy in front of nearly 56,000 fans. FA chief executive Brian Barwick said the announcement was "great news for football fans in this country and indeed the world over". He added: "The Cup final and Wembley Stadium go hand in hand and everybody at the FA is looking forward to a great day." Wembley Stadium managing director Alex Horne said: "We're delighted with the news and I would like to thank Brent Council for their help during this process. "We received the keys to the stadium just over a fortnight ago, since then Wembley and the FA's staff have worked incredibly hard to put on two great test events in a very short period of time. "We realise that there is still some way to go yet and are digesting the feedback we have received in order to ensure that coming to Wembley Stadium is a fantastic experience for fans." Brent Council chief executive Gareth Daniel said: "We are delighted to be able to hand over this safety certificate, which will allow this 90,000-seat stadium to open, bringing back world-class music and sporting events to Wembley." The FA also announced that finals of the FA Trophy and the FA Vase will be held at Wembley on 12 and 13 May respectively, at a capped capacity - as part of the build up to the official opening on 19 May. The keys to the new Wembley Stadium were handed to the FA on 10 March, more than one year after it was originally scheduled to open. The 2006 Cup final was due to take place there, but had to be postponed after work fell behind schedule. The ground, designed by leading architect Sir Norman Foster, cost £757m.' --------------------------------- [23] Gerrard on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: "I think Wayne knows himself that he needs a goal. But he's more than just goals, he works really hard for the team and he's one of the first names on the teamsheet. We love playing with him." --------------------------------- [22] Fines for Chelsea and Arsenal --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: from Sky 'Arsenal and Chelsea have both been fined £100,000 following the melee which marred the Carling Cup final. Towards the latter stages of Chelsea's 2-1 win at The Millennium Stadium on 25th February, a tangle between John Obi Mikel and Kolo Toure sparked a brawl. Players and officials from both clubs became involved, while managers Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger came onto the pitch in an attempt to defuse the situation. Mikel and Toure, along with Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, were sent off for their part in the incident, while both clubs were later hit with Football Association charges. At a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday - after the London clubs had admitted the charges - The FA issued fines of £100,000. The Premiership rivals were also reprimanded by The FA and the organisation explained the reasons behind the punishment, citing the bust-up as 'serious, unacceptable and damaging to the image of the game'. "Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC have each been fined £100,000 and reprimanded for the involvement of their players and officials in a mass confrontation towards the end of the Carling Cup Final on 25 February," read an FA statement. "The clubs were charged with failing to ensure that their players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative and/or violent behaviour. Both clubs admitted the charge. "The Commission stated that it viewed the incident as serious, unacceptable and damaging to the image of the game. However, it bore into account the guilty pleas and the mitigation put forward by both clubs. "It found that Arsenal players had been marginally more involved in the Carling Cup Final incident, but that Chelsea FC had past proven cases in recent years regarding the general behaviour of their players where warnings had been issued." --------------------------------- [21] Reserve team tonight --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: Heaton, Richard Eckersley, Lea, Chester, Cathcart, Sean Evans, Lee, Hewson, Mullan, Eagles, Burns, Barnes. He's been fantastic. He's been a great signing for us and I think he's really helped us get to where we are. He's had a great season. His passing is brilliant, most people see that straight away, and not just that, he works hard for the team as well. Have you enjoyed playing alongside him? I have, yeah. It's been nice because he's so composed and calm on the ball. It's been really enjoyable and I think we've developed a good understanding. Hopefully that will continue. How does he differ to previous midfield partners? He's obviously a completely different player to Roy Keane... I don't know if he is that much of a different player to Roy. They do a similar role. It's difficult to compare him to other players. I don't look at it like that. I just know that I can play alongside him and I feel comfortable alongside him in the team. He's got all the capabilities of a top midfielder and that's what you need at this club. Has his arrival brought about a change in your role at all? No, I don't think so. Our job is the same as it has been when I've played with anyone else in midfield: get the ball to our most dangerous players in attacking positions. If we can do that then we've got every chance of winning games because of the quality of our attacking players. I suppose he's freed me up a little bit to try and get forward more. I know he doesn't get forward that often. But he can do that, he's definitely capable of scoring goals. But he is more of a sitting midfielder, so he takes on that role and I can get forward. Are you pleased with your own form this season? [Shrugs] ?it's been all right. I know I can play better. I'd like to be scoring a few more goals and making a few more as well. Hopefully in the important last few months of the season I can contribute a bit more. You never seem to build up your own performances... Well, I just think I've played better in the past. I think I'm capable of getting to that level again and I believe I can still do better than I have done this season. As you've got older, has your training regime changed? Football has moved on, but I don't think training has changed all that much. The diet side of it is still pretty much the same. The way we train, with Valter di Salvo (United's fitness coach), has changed a little bit. There are more days in the gym. I still love going outside and playing football, that's what I love doing. My approach to training has always been the same. You have to put every effort into it to get the benefit in games. I'd like to think I'm still doing that. Do you still enjoy training? Oh yeah, I love training every day. Training outside that is, I don't really enjoy the gym side of it. But that's something that you have to do and you just get on with it. But, yeah, I love going out and playing football. If you could improve one aspect of your game, what would it be? Defending. Shocking defending. My tackling isn't the best [smiles]. People often talk about that... My tackling? I'm not really that bothered by what people say. When you think about it, my disciplinary record isn't really that bad for a central midfield player. I do make some bad tackles, but never on purpose. Are referees understanding of that? Referees are great with me, well, most of the time. There's been the odd game where you make one tackle after five minutes and you get a booking. Then I really have to be careful. But, most of the time, I don't ever have a problem with referees. This time last year you were out with an eye injury, a taste of what life is like without football. Did you ever consider a what you might do when your playing days end? I'm probably going to think about what I do when my career finishes when it's actually over. There's so much to think about when you're playing, and I'm really enjoying playing football at the moment, so I just want to concentrate on that. http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2051413-10426532 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2051413-5039258 Check http://www.rednews.co.uk to view the image which has been removed from plain text email version of news --------------------------------- [19] This is Lancashire with early Blackburn team news --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: 'BLACKBURN boss Mark Hughes is hopeful his defensive rock Ryan Nelsen WILL be fit to face Wayne Rooney and Manchester United this weekend. The Kiwi defender has been troubled by a niggling hamstring problem since the 2-0 FA Cup quarter final win over Manchester City two weeks ago, an injury which resulted in him being withdrawn last week from both of New Zealand's international friendlies with Costa Rica and Venezuela. However, Rovers are quietly confident their talismanic skipper will return to training tomorrow and, assuming there's no further set-backs over the next few days, he should be ready to lead the team against Sir Alex Ferguson's Premiership champions in waiting. Nelsen has been a pivotal figure for Rovers since he returned to the side following a nine month injury lay-off at the end of January. Rovers have kept five clean sheets in the 10 games Nelsen has featured in this season, and four of those came in his last five appearances, with Bolton's Nicolas Anelka being the only man to beat Brad Friedel during that period. To have Nelsen back for the trip to Old Trafford would therefore be a massive boost as Rovers prepare to face an in-form United side that has scored in 20 successive games since they last drew a blank against West Ham United on December 17.' --------------------------------- [18] Andy Ritchie on Rooney --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: "It is totally unfair the stick Wayne has been given since England's draw in Israel. It really annoys me that people are on his back. It is ridiculous the expectations people place on him. He is still finding his feet for United, let alone England. He is 21, and no matter what he has already achieved, the fact is that he is still only a babe. You've got to give him time to mature as a player. The critics have got to give him some leeway and have some patience. If he gets to the age of 27 or 28, and the same question marks are being levelled at him, then maybe those critics will have a case, but at the moment it is terribly unjustified. People go on about his England scoring record; well, I don't think 12 goals in 37 matches is something to worry about. It is virtually a goal every three games. That's good for a young lad. We have all seen how Wayne has matured at United on the domestic front, particularly in the Premiership. But he's playing at that level every week. You are bound to learn quicker. His England matches and European games for United only just adds up to a season of matches. You can't expect to learn as quickly on those stages, because the matches are too spaced out. Champions League is one level and international football is even higher, but because you are not playing those games every week, it is bound to take longer to get your head around the different styles and tactics. Wayne is still working it all out in his own mind. I can't relate to it too much, because I never played at full international level - and only had one Under-21 cap - but I know from that one match that the difference from normal league football was enormous. He's a strong lad mentally, who can probably handle it all. But if the critics continue to hit him all the time, you don't know the harm you could be doing. It might all prove too much for him. Missing Michael Owen could be a factor in Wayne's scoring dip for England. Wayne has not really had a stable partner since Michael has been injured and that can't help him. You look at successful England partnerships such as Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, Gary Lineker and Peter Beardsley, and Alan Shearer and Michael Owen. They hit it off because they had many games together and complemented each other. I think when Owen and Rooney have played together, they have been like Lineker and Beardsley. Owen is the natural goalscorer like Lineker, and Wayne is the player who drops off, scores goals but provides like Beardsley did. But up to such time when Michael returns, the critics should just get off Wayne's back and let him get on with it. We have an extraordinary talent to call on and everyone should allow him the time to show it." --------------------------------- [17] MEN with Brown link --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, March 27, 2007 by ed: 'WES Brown is on Newcastle's summer transfer hit-list. The Geordies are hoping to tempt the Mancunian away from Old Trafford with the offer of regular first-team football at St James' Park. The Longsight-born centre-back is being kept out of United's seniors by Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Injury to captain Gary Neville and FA Cup opportunities have allowed the 27-year-old to get into the picture at right-back but his long-term future still looks to be as a fringe player. Brown is still rated by Sir Alex Ferguson and he has become a vital part of United's run-in due to Neville's ankle ligament injury. He is set to retain his place against Blackburn on Saturday in the Premiership at Old Trafford, plus the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final in Italy against Roma next Wednesday. With a key title battle at Portsmouth to follow, plus the second leg of the Euro match and the FA Cup semi-final against Watford at Villa Park, Brown is sure to get the amount of games that he desires. That might cloud his judgment when he comes to look beyond the Treble bid over the next two months. Next season, there is every possibility he will be facing the same on-off frustration he has endured this campaign. Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has already begun planning for next season. The Magpies are out of the UEFA Cup, have no relegation issues and aren't in contention for a European place in the Premiership this term. Roeder is understood to have put Brown on his list of summer targets for chairman Freddy Shepherd to pursue. The lure of teaming up with fellow Manc and ex-Red Nicky Butt on Tyneside could convince Brown to call a halt to his nine-year United senior career. Butt ended his Old Trafford tenure in the summer of 2004 when, at the age of 29, he decided he'd had enough of being a fringe player at Old Trafford. Brown, who will be 28 in October, is widely thought to have lost his England squad place because of the United situation, having been a part of Steve McClaren's pool earlier in the term, playing against Andorra at Old Trafford. Newcastle have also been linked with Brown's team-mate Mikael Silvestre, but it is understood that the French defender is not on Roeder's wish-list.' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For United books, videos, DVDs etc http://www.rednews.co.uk/ama.php?id=amazon ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the very latest news check out the website: http://www.rednews.co.uk Yahoo!
