[24] Story about Nani?

http://www.thesoccerblog.org/premiership/man-utd-might-sign-nani-for-less-than-2-million/

'Manchester United could snap up Sporting Lisbon star Nani for chump change if
a Portuguese ruling falls in the players union’s favour.
Sporting have slapped a £15M price-tag on the winger, who apart from United, is
also being chased by Tottenham and Inter Milan.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, an imminent verdict in Portugal might see
all Liga players’ asking prices slashed, as they could be free to buy
themselves out of their contracts with a fee based on their current salary.
That would mean United being able to sign Nani for less than £2 million.
Portuguese clubs have already entered a ‘pact’ to not take advantage should the
ruling fall in the players’ favour, however it would still leave Liga clubs
exposed to foreign raiders. United may still choose to negotiate a realistic
fee with Sporting, however, as they enjoy a close relationship with the Lisbon
giants.'

[23] Times on all things United
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
'Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to play down Manchester United’s chances of
repeating their treble success of eight years ago yesterday, claiming that
injuries could yet undermine a season that promises so much.

Having appeared happy to embrace talk of an unprecedented second treble just a
few weeks ago, Ferguson’s latest utterances on the subject could be construed
as an attempt either to lull the opposition into a false sense of security or
deflect pressure away from his players, or both, but the manager has good
reason to strike a cautious note.

While United’s success in 1999, when they won the Premiership, FA Cup and
Champions League, owed much to the fact that they suffered no notable injuries,
as Ferguson has conceded, the manager is not sure that his squad has been
blessed with the same good fortune this season as they step up their pursuit of
the treble.

As revealed in The Times on Tuesday, Gary Neville, the captain, will be missing
for up to another six weeks with ankle ligament damage, while Mikaël Silvestre,
the France defender, has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a
dislocated shoulder.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal winger and United’s top goalscorer, is
struggling with a sprained heel, Darren Fletcher, the midfield player, is still
absent with an ankle problem and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha are short
of match fitness after several weeks out with knee and hamstring injuries
respectively.

“No one talks about that,” Ferguson said of the treble. “It is a possibility
but more of an impossibility given the number of games we have, the speed of
the games and the competition.

“In 1999 we had no injuries to contend with so that was the lucky break we got
in that particular year. This year we are dealing with a few injuries at this
moment in time, but we do cope very well with them and we will have a go at
everything.”

With Chelsea not playing Watford until later in the day, United will go nine
points clear at the top of the Barclays Premiership if they beat Blackburn
Rovers at home on Saturday, but while the league may remain the principal
focus, the FA Cup and Champions League are very much on the agenda.

United face Watford in their FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park two weeks on
Saturday, by which time they will know if they have overcome AS Roma to reach
the last four of the Champions League.

“We have done well and the players are playing with a great deal of
confidence,” Ferguson said. “They are showing a lot of maturity and they are
growing up together, which you always hope to get when a new team comes along.

“I think the competition in the Premier division has got harder in the last few
years, there is no question about that. The standard, as you can see English
teams doing better in Europe now, has risen. The quality we have in the Premier
League is the highest. I think we have the best division in Europe. For a while
the Spanish league eight or nine years ago were in front, but I think we have
overtaken them.”

Giuseppe Rossi, meanwhile, is confident that he will be a part of Ferguson’s
plans next season. The forward, who featured for Italy Under-21 in the 3-3 draw
against England Under-21 in the opening game of the new Wembley Stadium last
weekend, has spent the second half of the season on loan at Parma after a
frustrating spell at Newcastle United, but he is determined to make an impact
at Old Trafford.

“My contract with United does not expire until June 2010 and I expect to
complete it,” Rossi said. “It is important for young players to get their
chance and I am getting my chance at Parma, where I am turning out regularly
and playing well.”

[22] FA on Villa Semi allocation

"The difference between the allocations is a total of 200 tickets, and we have
to divide the stadium somehow. If you incorporate the hospitality areas, there
will actually be more Manchester United fans inside the ground. The United
allocation was also reduced on the basis of advice from Aston Villa's safety
officer, due to the fact that they persistently stand when they go to Villa
Park."

[19] From the Guardian

Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
'Tougher application of football banning orders will come into force next week,
the Home Office announced yesterday. The government believes that banning
orders have transformed the behaviour of unruly supporters and claims that the
measures are now being replicated by other countries.
The Violent Crime Reduction Act, which comes into force next Friday, will
increase from three to five years the maximum period of a banning order made
after an application by the police, and for the first time the Crown
Prosecution Service and British Transport Police will be able to apply for
banning orders, a power previously limited to local chief police officers.

Police will also be able to apply for a banning order on the basis of a
complaint - such as overseas police film footage of misbehaviour - rather than
only on a conviction for a football-related offence. The act will also require
known troublemakers to surrender their passports five days before an overseas
match.
New ticket-touting laws will also come in, with a maximum £5,000 fine for
unauthorised sale of match tickets on the internet - and it will become illegal
to advertise the unauthorised sale of tickets.

Vernon Coaker, the Home Office minister dealing with football disorder, said:
"Over the weekend 4,500 England fans travelled to Israel without any incidents
or arrests . . . the behaviour and reputation of the fans has improved
dramatically over recent years."

England fans passed a crucial test with their largely good behaviour at last
summer's World Cup, when some 350,000 supporters travelled to Germany. The Home
Office said arrests for violent disorder had fallen by 32% in each of the past
two seasons. There are currently 3,290 known troublemakers under banning orders.

Coaker said: "In light of recent football problems in Italy and elsewhere, the
Home Office and police are working closely with their counterparts across
Europe and with Uefa. Our banning-order strategy is based on partnership with
supporter groups and the police."

[18] Fergie and... global warming

from Guardian

'The scientists have warned of the dangers and the politicians have promised to
act, but Al Gore is still not satisfied the world is taking climate change
seriously enough. The answer, the former US vice-president has reasoned, could
be Sir Alex Ferguson. The Manchester United manager was one of 150 or so
high-level individuals brought to Cambridge this week to meet Mr Gore, who
taught them to deliver their own version of An Inconvenient Truth, his
Oscar-winning film on global warming.

His other "climate leaders" included Charles Dunstone, chief executive of
Carphone Warehouse, Vivienne Cox, chief executive of BP, and Father Sean
McDonagh, a priest and eco-theologian. In a letter to each, Mr Gore says: "I
hope that you will be first of many deeply concerned citizens who will receive
this training in the UK and spread the message to deal with this looming threat
to our planet, neighbours and way of life."

[17] Irwin on Heinze
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
"It didn't look like Heinze was going to get a second bite of the cherry at
United. It's a fact of life at Old Trafford that United are linked with players
elsewhere every day and if a player is not in the first team then he will be
linked with a club wanting him. There has been a lot of talk of Gabby going
here, there and everywhere and it's hard to know the truth about it. I have
been a big fan of Heinze and at his best I would have him in the team ahead of
Evra because of his defensive qualities. He edges it for me because of that.
Patrice, however, has been outstanding this season. His improvement has been
dramatic. He has come on a ton and United haven't looked any weaker with him in
the side. So up to a few matches ago he had the position in his grip. It was
very hard for Heinze under those circumstances. He fought back early to go the
World Cup in Germany last summer with Argentina. I am not sure the club would
have been too happy with that. Nevertheless, he went but suffered a bit as a
result this season. Because he wasn't getting regular matches his game fitness
suffered. In view of that and how Patrice was playing you did have to wonder if
he'd ever get back in on a regular basis and would he put up with that. I want
to see Gabby at United again next season. I want the club to hang on to all the
players they have. Battles for places is vital. Heinze's fantastic display
against Bolton was the Gabriel Heinze of two years ago and it was great to see."

'Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic came face to face on Wednesday in the Euro
2008 qualifiers.

Serbia and Portugal both dropped points after a 1-1 draw in Belgrade. Tiago put
the visitors ahead after just five minutes, but Bosko Jankovic levelled eight
minutes before the interval to earn a draw.

Ronaldo was denied on numerous occasions by the heroics of Serbia stopper
Vladimir Stojkovic.

The stalemate allowed Tomasz Kuszczak's Poland to move five points clear in
Group A with their 1-0 win over Armenia.

Rio Ferdinand played the full 90 minutes in an unconvincing England win over
Andorra. Steven Gerrard's brace and David Nugent's late goal spared Steve
McClaren's side after jeers greeted the half-time whistle with the scores at
0-0. Wayne Rooney endured a frustrating evening. Targeted for rough treatment
he was later booked - he'll now miss the game against Estonia in June - and
then subtituted. Michael Carrick was an unused sub.

Jonny Evans earned his fifth Northern Ireland cap at left-back as Lawrie
Sanchez's side leapfrogged Sweden into top spot in Group F. David Healy got the
goals in a 2-1 win after Sweden had taken the lead at Windsor Park.

Ryan Giggs scored in Wales' 3-0 win over San Marino in front of a sparse crowd
at the Millennium Stadium. The Reds winger put his country in front after three
minutes, before Gareth Bale and Jason Koumas completed the scoring.

John O'Shea played as the Republic of Ireland earned a valuable win over
Slovakia in Group D. They now share top spot with Germany and Czech Republic,
who occupy first and second spot on goal difference.'

"I think United will win the league this year. Playing them at Old Trafford is
about as difficult as it gets in the Premiership. But Blackburn have done well
against United under Mark Hughes so we’ll look to continue that. Everybody is
excited about the semi-final. t doesn't matter that we'll face Chelsea, we're
playing to win. We know it will be tough, but it's a one-off game and we're
genuinely confident of reaching Wembley. We knocked Arsenal out and have
enjoyed a really good run in the Cup. When I was a kid in South Africa, I
always dreamed of playing in an FA Cup final at Wembley. Now that the stadium
is open it could come true - and it might be against Manchester United. I've
always said that dreams can come true..."

[14] Official site on Fergie award
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
'Sir Alex Ferguson has picked up his second League Managers Association (LMA)
Performance League award of the season.

The LMA award quarterly accolades aimed at recognising the work of managers at
all levels of the professional game.

Sir Alex won the award earlier this season for the excellent start United made
to the 2006/07 campaign and now, as the season enters its most crucial stage,
the United boss has won it again for January-March 2007.

“It's a great honour to win this award for a second time," he told the LMA
website, leaguemanagers.com, after being presented with the award at United's
Carrington training ground by former Reds skipper Bryan Robson.

But he dedicated the award to the hard work his players and staff have put in
since the turn of the year. “The efforts of our players and all our coaching
staff has been fantastic this season," he said, "this award is for their
collective efforts.”

Chief Executive John Barnwell said: “It is a great achievement to win one award
in a season but the fact that Sir Alex has now won two demonstrates the
tremendously high standards he is setting for our profession on a consistent
basis."

Sir Alex beat two managers from League Two to top spot in the awards - powered
by ProZone. Stockport’s Jim Gannon finished runner-up behind Ferguson, with
Rochdale’s Keith Hill in third.

“Our unique awards are designed to reward and reflect success by managers at
all levels of the professional game," added Barnwell. "And Jim and Keith are
both doing marvellous jobs with Stockport and Rochdale."

[13] Mail report on last night for those that care
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
'Steve McClaren buckled under the pressure of managing England last night after
furious supporters called for him to be sacked during their 3-0 win over
Andorra.
England's head coach stormed out of the post-match Press conference after just
two questions, increasing concerns that he cannot cope with the pressure of
leading his country.
Asked if he would walk away from the job after 241 days in charge, he replied:
"Never."
Steven Gerrard scored twice for England and David Nugent added another, but
McClaren has been accused of a cover up over Frank Lampard's fitness.
Lampard asked for a private jet to fly him home before the match after being
told he would take no part in England's crucial game.
The Chelsea midfielder claims he only wanted to return for treatment on his
broken wrist - and insists he did not threaten to walk out on England.
As he watched from the sidelines, England left the field at half-time to taunts
of "You're not fit to wear the shirt" and abusive taunts aimed at McClaren.
Some of the players looked visibly stunned at the onslaught.
'Nothing concerns me outside, what you write or what people say. What matters
is inside. There's a great determination to prove people wrong. So, gentlemen,
if you want to write whatever you want to write you can write it. Because
that's all I'm going to say' - McClaren
It was followed after the break with them singing: "We want McClaren sacked."
The beleaguered England coach said: "We came here to win the game and it was
important to win it. The criticism goes with the job.
"We won a game in very difficult conditions and I'm proud of every one of them.
I told the players at half-time that we needed guts and character and we showed
that.
"It was never going to be easy but Steven Gerrard stepped forward and he picked
it up for us. That victory puts us in a better position."
In fact, England are now third after Israel beat Estonia 4-0 to move into
second and Russia, who did not play, are now fourth in Group E with a game in
hand.
Their disastrous 0-0 draw with Israel last Saturday leaves England with a
mountain to climb to qualify for Euro 2008 and they will have to travel to
Estonia on June 6 without Wayne Rooney.
The England striker was at boiling point throughout the clash against a team of
part-timers and he was finally booked in the second half.
McClaren eventually substituted him, but it is too late to avoid a suspension
after the troubled striker was booked in Israel on Saturday.
England were anything but impressive, but victory was their first in six
matches under their struggling coach, although the fans certainly made their
feelings known.
Skipper John Terry said: "During the game it is not nice for the players. For
the players' sake and England's sake it would be a lot better if they kept it
until after the game.
"The players have stood up and taken responsibility for underachieving in
recent games and we need the fans behind us."

[9] SUN on Rooney England ban

Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
'WAYNE ROONEY’S England misery continued last night.
The striker has still not scored a goal in a competitive international since
Euro 2004.

And he picked up a one-game ban after being booked in a bad-tempered clash in
Barcelona.

Skipper John Terry reckoned Roon was a victim of Andorra’s gamesmanship.

He said: “They were cheating, diving and time-wasting — but we half-expected
that. It’s not nice, we came here to play a football match and pick up three
points.”

Rooney’s ban means the Manchester United star misses our next qualifier in
Estonia on June 6.'

it so far...

"Some of the very best interviews with former United players that I've ever

all. Full of great anecdotes, detail and colour, bringing back just what it
was like following United in the pre-Ferguson era."

"A terrific antidote to the banal sporting autobiography. Next time someone
asks 'Where have the gameís characters gone?' here's an answer: They're
between the covers of We're the Famous Man United. Candid, full of
illuminating anecdotes and with an appeal well beyond those old enough to
remember the 70s and 80s and far beyond the borders of United fandom."

Ian Hawkey, The Sunday Times.

"Anyone who wants to read about nice, clean-cut footballers listening to Luther
Vandross and going to bed at 9.30pm should look away now. Andy Mitten has
compiled the warts-and-all, blow-by-blow forensic examination of what really
went on at Englandís biggest club in the 1980s. Utterly compelling."

Daniel Taylor, The Guardian.

"Twenty years on from their heyday, the players of the eighties have nothing to
hide. And even if they had, Andy Mitten would find it out. By turns
jaw-dropping, enraging, staggering and alarming, but always, always charged
with affection and enthusiasm, this book is what nostalgia is all about."

Jim White, The Daily Telegraph.

"First came the Busby Babes and now the modern United is 'all grown up'. This
hugely entertaining book proves that during the intervening 'teenage years' the
lads had themselves a bit of fun."

Graham Hunter, Sky.

"This book will define United work in this era like Jim White's book did a
decade ago. We knew many of these players as United heroes, but the fans knew
little about the real men inside the Red shirts they wore. Andy Mitten takes
characters we cheered on the terraces and allows us to see them in a new light;
away from the limelight. Tinged with humour, reflection and at times sadness,
these were the players who missed the golden wages on offer in today's football
by a decade yet played in an era that many fans fondly recall as they watched
gifted footballers giving their all. Away from the hyperbole surrounding
today's stars, these were real characters, real men, and here we see their real
stories - be it uplifting or eye opening. Life's ups and downs; before, during
and after their United careers. Mitten's honest approach and incisive
interviewing technique allows us a revealing and at times startling account of
what it was like to play for Manchester United and the life thereafter. Highly
recommended to young and old football fan alike, it will give a new perspective
on household names. Ideal for those who lived the 1980s generation, and those
who wish they had."

"Paul regards family life as very important. He knows what the travelling with
the international team is like and, coming to his age, I think he felt it was
time to give more time to his family. That is the reason he gave up
international football. His form this season has been absolutely fantastic and
now we are getting him back fresh after a little break."

[4] Welbeck scores for England
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
watch him in the Youth Cup next week, below from uefa

'Daniel Welbeck was England's hero as his goal two minutes from time took his
team to the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals at the expense of
Serbia. Serbia had led Elite round Group 3 on goal difference at kick-off in
Sarajevo, both teams having beaten Bosnia-Herzegovina and Azerbaijan. Needing a
draw to reach the finals, Serbia held on until half-time but fell behind two
minutes after the interval when Vujadin Savi? turned in a Tristan Plummer cross
for an own goal. Goran Smiljani? equalised six minutes later and it seemed
Serbia were heading for the final tournament for the second year running. But
as the end neared Manchester United FC midfielder Welbeck nodded in Nathan
Porritt's corner to take England to the U17 showpiece for the fifth time in six
editions since the switch from U16 level.'

[3] Hello Mag on Rooney... the ringmaster
---------------------------------
Posted Thursday, March 29, 2007 by ed:
'As befits the fiancée of a premiership footballer, Coleen McLoughlin is
planning "a party to remember" to celebrate her 21st birthday. The festivities
to mark her coming of age on April 3 are likely to have a circus theme, with
her intended Wayne Rooney as "ringmaster".

Acrobats and trapeze artists have reportedly been booked, and there has been
speculation that the Sugababes and P Diddy will provide the entertainment. The
exact details of Saturday's £200,000 bash are being kept top secret, though, as
Coleen wants to surprise everyone. Workmen have been building an 18-foot-high
wall in the grounds of Thornton Manor, the couple's Merseyside home, to shield
preparations from prying eyes.

The guest list for the star-studded affair will certainly include her partner's
Manchester United team-mates, as well as former England colleague David Beckham
and his wife Victoria. Coleen is an admirer of Posh's style and is said to have
her eye on a birthday gift along the lines of a ten-carat sparkler the former
Spice Girl has been wearing. "Coleen loves the massive ring that Victoria has
been wearing lately," said a friend. "She has been dropping loads of heavy
hints to Wayne."

Whatever presents the young celeb eventually gets to unwrap, the party will be
an opportunity to reflect on all that she has achieved to date. "In my school
year book, I joked that I wanted to be 'famous and living a life of luxury',
but I am as surprised as anyone at how my life has turned out," she says.'

[22] Rooney injures Lampard
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2007 by ed:
from the BBC

'England midfielder Frank Lampard has been ruled out of the Euro 2008 qualifier
against Andorra on Wednesday due to a cracked bone in his wrist.

The 28-year-old suffered the injury during training on Monday when he was
struck by a Wayne Rooney shot.

But the injury is worse than was first thought and Lampard will not feature at
Espanyol's Olympic Stadium.'

[21] They just refuse to talk about United

Joel Glazer gives the Tampa Tribune an interview and...

'Coming off one of the most disappointing seasons in team history, Bucs
executive vice president Joel Glazer sat down with Tampa Tribune NFL writer Ira
Kaufman on Tuesday at the owners meetings to discuss the state of the
franchise. Only two topics were declared off limits - the health of owner
Malcolm Glazer and the family's involvement with Manchester United.'

and

What's going on with seat deposits?

We're entering the 10th season in our new stadium. Right now, we're basically
starting a process of how we're going to deal with that. Our fans are the
lifeblood of this organization. Without the fans, none of us are here. We're
not that deep into the process. Whatever the solution, I think it'll be fair
for everyone and people will be comfortable with it. We have the best fans in
the NFL. Even when things aren't going well, fans are supportive. They are
passionate about the Buccaneers. What do the fans expect? They expect us to do
everything we can to be the best.
