Sorry, just now I asked Bob instead of you the following questions:

What are you using for SMTP? qmail or sendmail or something?

What are you using for POP3? qpopper or what?
And do you hash your /var/spool/mail directory? Something like
/var/spool/mail/f/o/foo mailbox for foo?
