XF86Setup would do, offering you standard monitor capabilities. 
But ConfigX does it, too, if I remember well.

You select capabilities crescendo. Once the image is *way* bad
(i.e. no longer an image), stop the server immediately
(Ctrl-Alt_Backspace), and don't try it again. It's above the
limits.
Don't worry, 1 or 2 seconds won't set it on fire (I hope :)

Finding the max resolution (if it's not very old it might do
1024x768, start with 800x600), then find the max refresh rate for
a specific resolution (start with 48 or 50Hz, pretty common).

You might even try to do this in windows, using the "test"
button, and pressing enter if the image is wrong - you can stop
it faster. Whatever it can do under windows, it can do under
linux, too.
