Remember that X (the X11 server) is running on the machine that you're
sitting at (where you ran xhost) and that KDE runs it's own window manager,
especially when you run startkde (the kwin & call is part of the startkde
script). I was trying to do this is a slightly different situation, but the
fact that you're running xhost suggests that the machine you're on uses X as
it's primary display driver with a local window manager whereas I was only
running X to work with the remote system.

What (I think) you'll need to do is start a second X server with a different
display number with without a window manager. Then connect to the remote
system and change the DISPLAY environment variable to point to the desired
display number on your machine. Then run (for example) 'kdeinit +kcminit
+kdesktop +kicker' to get the KDesktop and kicker bar running in that second
display.

I'm sure I left out details and that there are flaws in my thinking, but I
hope this at least gives you some direction.

Subject: starting kde from another machine

I have installed rh 8.0 on my machine in place of w2k. I now use rdp to
connect when needed. Now what I want to do is to startkde from another one
of our other servers.

I run xhost servername

telnet to the server, login and run startkde.

It looks like the x from the new server takes overs the window managers.
How would I start the new one on like <ctrl><alt><f8>

Thanks
