Following the discussion over the last couple of days over the release of RH 9 has been interesting. Question: Obviously most of us are very fond of Redhat, at least up to 7.3 gathered by some of the heated discussion today. Since I would assume RH would be/is your first choice of a Linux distribution, what is your second and third choices?
Just curious
I've tried Gentoo, Debian, SUSE, Mandrake, RedHat
I administrate over 130 servers at work with Solaris, HP-UX, SCO, and various RedHat distributions.
I've been doing professional UNIX sys-admin work for about 9 years, and played with Slackware for
about 2 years before that. In the past I've used IRIX, Tandem-UX, DG-UX, Tru64, SunOS....
For my personal desktop I've switched between RedHat linux (with lot's of addons from FreshRPM's and
Codeweavers) and windows for the last few years, probably 50% of the time on either one.
Although they all have their ups and downs, I have to say that I like RedHat the best.
I would stick with RedHat 8.0 for at least another 6 months or so, and then I would set up a test box
to migrate my apps to before jumping into RedHat 9.
I say this because just last week I downloaded the 8.0.94 iso's (which I assume are almost identical to the
9 release) and installed them, and Codeweavers, WineX, lots of third party RPM's and binaries I had laying
around wouldn't work. I assume that it is simply a matter of getting them all to recompile with the right
"tweaks", but I just don't have time to muck around with it. So, I will keep using 8.0 happily until
Evolution Connector, WineX, Codeweavers and such come out with 9 releases....
BTW, you can get KDE 3.1 RPM's at sourceforge for 8.0, and they work fairly easily if you have some
experience dealing with RPM's.
If I **HAD** to make a jump I would probably choose Mandrake.
