The following change may also resolve the problem:
in "/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth#", change PEERDNS=no to yes. It worked for me.

Otto,
Sorry, my mistake. Yes eth0 does activate in this case but it fails to successfully reach the internet. I can not ping any IP addresses out on the internet.

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]I don't understand what you mean when you say the eth0 failed to activate. The IP address you are assigning is unique isn't it. You don't have the other machine up and running at the same time. Explain what you mean by eth0 fail to activate. Also check your /etc/host file.

Otto,you
Earlier in my trouble shooting I tried the process
suggested of copying the addresses for IP,broadcast
and netmask from a different machine that I usedto
access the internet using the same cable modem atthe
same location but eth0 fails to active.on
The cable modem successfully access the internet
other machines at the same location running redhat6.2
and windows.Modem

Ken,
Maybe you've already tried this, but my
newmodem
has a "feature"
which requires it to be reset every time a

before then get the ip
address and the dns address that worked before
hard code that in the linux box to see if that works if that works then you don't have dhcp setup correctly. If that doesn't work then make sure your cable modem is provisioned(sp) by the ISP if you have never had it hooked up before. You know MAC address etc....
