You seem to be the only other person in the world with this problem! I have
the same problem, but I don't recall getting that many messages in
/var/log/messages.

I just put in an audio CD. When I tried to mount it (which is not what you do
with an audio CD, so I expected it to fail), I got the following in
/var/log/messages:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mar 1 11:14:22 localhost automount[159]: attempting to mount entry /mnt/cdrom
Mar 1 11:14:22 localhost kernel: Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.56

systems
Mar 1 11:14:22 localhost automount[4273]: mount(generic): failed to mount
/dev/cdrom (type iso9660) on /mnt/cdrom
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I start up xplaycd, I get no messages to the log file. kscd also yields
no error messages. Both of them report either no CD or Ejected...

I tried the terminal-based CD player, but it just hangs.

I have an NEC ATAPI player whic worked just fine under all the installations
of Linux I've had on here since 1994, right up to Red Hat 5.2. But once I
upgraded to 6.1, the audio cd's don't work.

I have 6.1 on my work system with a SCSI CD-ROM drive, and that works just
fine.

No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it
all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly
the functions he is competent to. It is by dividing and subdividing these
republics from the national one down through all its subordinations, until it
ends in the administration of every man's farm by himself; by placing under
every one what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the
best.
