I also have a new Acer with the same 50x Max cd-rom and the same problem
playing audio cd's!  I also get the same boot messages.  I thought that
this problem might be related to another difficulty I have had with the cd
drive: VMware refuses to recognize this device.  Others have mentioned
similar problems in VMware discussion lists.  A company representative
believes that it is due to a bug in the kernel that affects certain
not-too-smart cd drives. Reportedly, this bug is to be fixed in the next
kernel release (2.2.15). If the audio problem really is related to this,
upgrading to the next kernel may be the solution.
