Think so, try this out:- 1) Hosts and resolv are not used by a service, per se, they are used by the local protocol stack., such that: 1.1) /etc/hosts gives fast resolution of static name/ip assignments and simple aliases - good for small lans. 1.2) /etc/resolve.conf tells the protocol stack the local domain and the upstream DNS server. 2) bind implements DNS using the "named" daemon in one of several configurations - primary, secondary, and cache, 3) Bind on Linux defaults to using the hosts file before going to an upstream DNS server.
