Brian - I finally got all this to work using the Samba-PDC-Howto.

I couldn't find it on the samba website or Linux Documentation Project, and
a lot of links in other samba documents point to a 404 error.

BUT - after hours of searching one link finally worked. A link in Germany of
all places.

Turns out the PC name has to have a user account as well. In both
/etc/passwd and /etc/samba/smbpasswd. The PC name is appended with a $.

AND a user in the admin group need to be in the smbpasswd file as well. THIS
user is then used to log you in to the PDC. Once the PDC is contacted with
the root (admin) priviledges, it allows you to set up a log-on for a
standard user.

XP now presents me with the familiar Ctrl-Alt-Delete logon screen, and I can
log on with my user credentials to the DEKKERS domain. Drives get mapped via
the login script and all is well.

Unfortunately - all my setting in XP have changed as it now treats me as a
new user. My backgrounds, e-mail, IE etc have all been messed up but it's
not permanent damage by any means - I've already imported everything back.
I'm sure I'll find some other changes but I'm sure I can fix those up too.

I have no idea what's going to happen if the PDC is down and I'm not game to
try it at the moment, as my normal Edward Dekkers login has already stopped
working, but I'm sure I'll figure that one out as well.

Thanks for the help. If anybody wants a working link to the samba-PDC-Howto
let me know.

Regards,
Ed.
