Thanks, I'll try this as soon as my apt upgrade is done.

Also, I have assigned a static 192.168.0.NNN to this pc and I am behind a
router I bought for my DSL.  My pc itself does not have a firewall yet. I
want to use the iptables and my last try at setting up a server had ipchains
automatically installed when I answered yes to Redhats firewall install
question.

Can my pc still be hacked at this point?
